CHRONICLES OF THE DOKA
#16 in a continuing series of 84 days in the teaching life of a sensei
“Actually Dharman, I don’t know how Tesshu accomplished his great sword skill. But I am not far from the mark. All martial disciples will leapfrog from technique into concepts, back into technique, etc.
What I do know is that we organize the principles of the body first. The body is tangible. It’s easy to see the results of our labor. You can feel the control over your limbs, feel your punch begin to snap, count the points you score more readily in kumite.
Training reveals the laws that govern the body and teaches us the parameters of our physical abilities. These principles form a ladder to new heights of perception. Like Tesshu, you ascend from the physical to the mental, from the mental to the spiritual.”
I see Dharman on the seiza bench placing his invisible foot on his newly gained rung. My throat is getting scratchy from too much talking and I still have three more classes to teach today.
